Born in 1968 under the name of "zoo des Abrets", the Domaine des fauves extends less than 20 years later on 22,000 m2. In the 1980s and 1990s, the site was home to 24 species of birds and 32 species of mammals, including chimpanzees and bears. At the end of the 90s, the zoo occupied 3 hectares of land and brought together more than 250 animals. Significant changes and upgrades to the site are taking place at the dawn of the 21st century, particularly to improve conditions for captivity. The last chimpanzees leave the zoo to join other structures. By becoming the Domaine des fauves, the site is also experiencing a remarkable evolution: it is revegetated and the enclosures are carefully landscaped. In the 2000s, the estate continued to experience improvements, expansions and new hospitality projects. The site's animal population has been enriched by numerous felines, canids and nocturnal raptors. In 2016, the site inaugurated the territory of wolves, a new space in which visitors can enter for a unique immersion in the middle of canines.
The field of wild animals is distinguished by enclosures designed to be able to get as close as possible to the big cats. But the site is home to a wide variety of animal species, from large mammals to turtles to birds. You can of course meet the large carnivorous mammals that are cheetahs, pumas, panthers, jaguars, tigers, lions, hyenas and wolves. Small carnivores are also to be discovered, such as lynxes, fishing cats, oslo, mongoose or meerkat. Aviaries shelter diurnal and nocturnal predatory birds. Diurnal species are also to be discovered during the free flight show. Aquatic and land turtles also live in the park. The visit to the Domaine des fauves includes educational activities and shows. Free access to the wolf territory is one of the highlights of a day at the park: it is done in the company of a trainer or a nurse, for about twenty minutes.
